Composts

• Humus is vital because it contains and maintains the masses of microscopic organisms in the soil which are the key to fertility. It is crucial to regularly replenish the humus content in the soil through humus-makers such as composts and conditioners because the humus balance declines considerably during cultivation.

• The inclusion of good quality compost into beds and borders will aid plant health considerably.  Valuable organisms within compost regulate the poor ones already present in the soil.

• Plants will stand a far better chance of germination if sown in the correct compost.  The use of fresh and sterile compost for seeds and cuttings will prevent wilting.

• The regular incorporation of compost into soil is a key ingredient for successful growing of vegetables.

• By using compost, it is possible to grow plants which would otherwise fail in the existing natural soil. A good example of this is Ericaceous Compost which provides the essential acidity to grow lime hating plants such as Rhododendrons, Camelias, Azaleas and Heathers.
